Strolling through botanical Gardens in Scotland

(By Accident, Mostly)
Sometimes the best adventures aren’t planned — they just grow on you. That’s exactly what happened on my trip to Scotland, where I unintentionally started a little tradition of visiting botanical gardens in each city we stopped in.
It began with zero expectations and turned into a lovely leafy thread that connected Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness.
🌿 Stop 1: Glasgow — The Accidental Garden
Our first botanical detour happened completely by chance. We were in Glasgow, wandering without much of a plan, when we stumbled into the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. One minute we were just walking down the street, the next we were inside a glasshouse filled with towering palms and tropical ferns, wondering how we got so lucky.
There’s something magical about this place — between the Victorian greenhouses, hidden corners, and people lounging in the grass like locals in a Jane Austen novel, it set the tone for the rest of the trip. Without realizing it, this spontaneous garden stroll planted a seed.
PS : do not miss the orchid nursery
🌸 Stop 2: Edinburgh — A Friendly Suggestion
Fast forward to Edinburgh. This time, it wasn’t the city that pulled us into another garden — it was a friend.
“You have to go to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh,” she said. And since we already had one garden under our belt, why not make it two?
This one felt grander — a place where you could genuinely spend hours (we did), wandering between manicured flowerbeds, little forest paths, and views of the Edinburgh skyline peeking through the treetops. It was peaceful, yet vast — like the garden version of a museum with endless rooms.
My friend was hungry so we accompanied her to have lunch at the Cafeteria she said the butternut squash soup was delicious. Who would’ve thought a cafeteria lunch would be as good!
Also, 10/10 would recommend for a post-lunch walk.
PS : do not miss the cute store
🍃 Stop 3: Inverness — The What-the-Hell Garden
By the time we reached Inverness, the tradition had taken root. We had a few hours to kill before our check-in, so we opened up Google Maps and thought: “If we’ve done the others… why not this one too?”
That’s how we ended up at the Inverness Botanic Gardens, possibly the most unexpected one of all. Smaller, quieter, and maybe less polished — but still totally worth it. There was a cozy charm to this one, like it was just doing its own thing up north while the bigger gardens were showing off.
PS : do not miss the arid gardens green house!
I didn’t set out to visit every major botanical garden in Scotland. But I’m glad I did. There’s something soothing and grounding about these green spaces — especially when traveling. They’re a great way to slow down, get off the tourist track, and just… breathe.
So, if you ever find yourself in a new city and don’t know what to do — just search for the local botanical garden. Trust me. It might just become a tradition you never planned for.
